SU junior Kai Smith wins prestigious Truman Scholarship
For three successive years, a student at the University of Seattle, the most prestigious Truman Scholarship. Junior Kai SU 2008 Smith was considered one of the Harry S. Truman Scholar Truman Scholarship Foundation. The Foundation awards merit-$ 30000 scholarships to students of the graduate school in preparation for careers in public service. After a rigorous national competition authorities, about 65 researchers are selected each year for the price.
The award is Smith’s plans to study the Jura and the American government at Georgetown University. Finally, he wished to return to his home state of Montana to work as an agent for better health, policy and process.
“I am extremely happy,” said Smith, science and history major policy. “My upbringing in rural Montana and my moral and academic education at the University of Seattle, both were instrumental in my commitment to public service.”
Smith, a Naef Scholar and graduate of the Honors Program SU’s, 12 Truman Scholar at the University of Seattle. It occurs in two courses SU students, Nazir Harb and Caroline Dennis, scholarships were awarded during the past year. Truman scientists SU: Emily James in 2006, Phuong Luu in 2004, 2003 and Dominic Draye, Kym Evanson in 1998, 1996 and Julie Flores, Manuel Teodoro in 1994, Josh Petersen, in the years 1992 and Shawna Mirghanbari in 1990. The first SU students to win a scholarship from Truman, Ruth Tressel, 1984. Seattle University has become one of the leading institutions in 15 countries, six or more, university students Truman awarded since 2003. Top of other universities Harvard belong Brown, George Town, Stanford and Yale.
“The choice of Kai is a huge testimony to himself and to teachers and programs at the University of Seattle,” said Truman faculty representative Jerry Cobb, SJ “It is an excellent Truman Scholar, and has a successful career in public service. ”
In his hometown, Smith helped the state to manage a Senate campaign and worked with the commissioner of the state for the medical insurance of the progressive agenda. Smith also acts on the advice of a non-profit-Montana, that young people involved in politics. On SU, it is the student body, Vice President of Finance acts as a guidance counselor.
Smith, in collaboration with other researchers at Truman for a week in early May, the orientation program 13 of William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. This event is culminate in a prize-giving ceremony in the library Truman, May 18.
Students apply for the Truman scholarship during their junior years.
